The downhill mountaining biking trails at Mount Sima remain closed to the public today.

After operating for several hours Sunday, staff at Sima deferred the opening of the mountain biking park, until the solution to an overheating lift chair motor is determined.

“We were delighted to have opened downhill mountain biking for the first time ever, and the riders raved about our new trails,” said Guillaume Rochet, area manager at Sima.

“Unfortunately, warm summer temperatures caused the system’s self protection circuit to shut down the chair’s motor, a situation not detected in testing earlier this summer.

“Our team is now assessing various cooling options and we will post our new opening date on our web site as soon as that information is known,” he added.

As of this morning, the hill had yet to make any further announcement regarding re-opening.

Operations and maintenance staff at the ski area spent two months this summer constructing two new trails for mountain biking.

They also added ramps back into the old Sima Slam Fest trail, using it as an advanced trail.

If the innaugural opening of summer mountain bike trails at Sima is successful, the plan is to add more trails next year.

Sima would also eventually like to make mountain bike rentals available for all levels of riders, in order to cash in on the tourism market in the territory.
