The third season of the Yukon Brewing Copper Haul Twister League is set to kick off on Sunday at Icy Waters Ltd. in Whitehorse.
The Copper Haul Twister league has three main categories, which includes one for both kids and adults as well as one for pet dogs.
Last year, there was an increase in participants, which organizers are hoping is a trend that continues this season.
“We have the snow, we have the temperatures, so it will be fun,” said Jonathan Lucas, one of the league’s organizers. “I just want everyone to come out and have a good time and use it for what it’s designed for, which is training so that your dogs get used to different situations.”
Sunday’s race is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., with a mushers meeting set to take place at 9:30 a.m. Lucas said individuals can register before the Mushers meeting at around 9:15 a.m.
Sunday’s race is being sponsored by H. Coyne and Sons and will award $50 to the first place time adult time. The adult division is for mushers 14 years of age and older.
The top five times receive a cash prize. As well, 20 per cent of the entry fees are given to the top five finishers.
This year’s course in the adult league will be slightly more difficult and will include a few more twists and turns than the one used last season. However, the league has volunteers at all of the turns to help out competitors if needed.
Individuals are encouraged to check the Copper Haul Twisters blog site Friday and Saturday evening for updates on racing and weather conditions.
