Collision sees seven people taken to hospital

Seven people were taken to hospital Wednesday after a collision on the Alaska Highway near Watson Lake.

Seven people were taken to hospital Wednesday after a collision on the Alaska Highway near Watson Lake.

The group, made up of a driver and six employees of the nearby Cantung Mine, suffered no life-threatening injuries after the crash, which occurred at about 11 a.m. Wednesday.

RCMP Const. Billy Gossen said this afternooon the passenger van was travelling east toward Watson Lake when it rear-ended a commercial transport truck just west of Nugget City.

The truck driver was not injured.

Gossen said the truck driver appears to have been slowing down to enter a nearby rest stop, to clear the snow off of his lights when the collision occurred.

“There were terrible conditions – total whiteout, from what I understand,” Stephen Leahy, CEO of mine owner North American Tungsten Corp. Ltd., said today.

Whitehorse General Hospital spokesperson Val Pike said today four of the patients were treated and released from Watson Lake Hospital.

Two were held at the hospital overnight, in stable condition, for observation.

The final patient has been medevaced to Vancouver for treatment but is also in stable condition, Pike said.

Three of the employees in the vehicle work for a contractor and three are direct employees of his company, Leahy said.

The ages and genders of the people involved in the crash were not available this morning.
