Canucks upset Sens to win novice hockey gold
The underdog Whitehorse Canucks saved their best for last, winning the Yukon Novice Hockey Championships in Dawson City last weekend.

The underdog Whitehorse Canucks saved their best for last, winning the Yukon Novice Hockey Championships in Dawson City last weekend.
The Canucks beat the Whitehorse Senators 7-5 in the final to win gold.
“The kids did a fantastic job,” coach Guy Gorrell told the Star. “We played eight games in two days.”
The final game was a white-knuckle ride, the coach explained. In the final period, Canucks eight-year-old starting goalie Orlina Menard went down with an injury with plenty of time to play.
“We had to go to a goalie who’s never played goal before,” Gorrell said.
Her teammate Rocky Nordvie offered to put on the pads, and went on to backstop his team to the championship win.
“The best was, we pulled it out,” said Gorrell. “For little kid stuff, it was awesome.”
Nolan Matthews sniped four goals to lead the Canucks to victory.
Rounding out the scoring were Rogan Parry and siblings Chelsi and Tanner Gorrell.
Senators Ty Beacon and Brayden Gleason-Frost each scored twice in the loss, while Marko Cooper chipped in a single.
The Whitehorse Jets, Whitehorse Canadiens, and two Dawson City teams also competed.
