THE BIG WINNER - Dave Thompson, president of the Whitehorse Curling Club presents cash calender grand prize winner Joy Simpson with a $1,500 cheque.
Like most non-profit organizations, the Whitehorse Curling Club is no stranger to using fund-raisers to help offset some of its operational expenses.
One of its annual fund-raisers that not only generates money for the club, but also gives back to the people that get involved is the cash calender drive.
The cash calenders are sold throughout the year and award a new or old winner every day. Winners are randomly drawn and receive at least $25.
The grand prize for the cash calender drive is $1,500, which was given out to Joy Simpson on Dec. 31. More than $13,000 of cash calendar funds is given out over the course of 365 days.
“It’s real important for us,” said the Whitehorse Curling Club’s business manager Jon Solberg. “We ask our members to help us sell them, so we try to get five booklets out to each member.
“The community has always seemed to support this and we certainly appreciate Whitehorse for their support and contribution towards this as well.”
The curling club typically ends up selling around 1,500 to 1,700 calendars, which are each valued at $20. The draw for the $1,500 grand prize is always done on Dec. 31.
As a result of all of the tickets drawn being thrown back in the bin, supporters of the cash calendar can win on multiple occasions throughout the year.
Besides the calender itself, there are also dates for curling related events as well as corporate sponsors of the club.
The calenders are can be purchased by contacting the club or visiting its lounge during office hours.
In other curling news, the club is set to launch its new website, which Solberg said could be up and running as early as today.
Some of the website changes will include a new look and more information regarding schedules and league play.
Solberg said the new site will also give individuals an opportunity to join the club by sending their information online. The different memberships include playing and non-playing.
Solberg said the biggest change will be the look of the site, which will showcase the club through more pictures and information about its leagues, bonspiels and other events.
“There’s a lot of upgrades being done to it,” he said. “It will give people an idea of what we have to offer here at the facility.”
The club’s website is http://www.whitehorsecurlingclub.com.
