Injured woman sent Outside
A 57-year-old Whitehorse woman is in critical condition at an Edmonton hospital after she was struck by a vehicle on the Alaska Highway on Monday afternoon.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was attempting to cross the Alaska Highway near the Trails North Car & Truck Stop in Porter Creek when she was struck by a northbound vehicle, the RCMP said today.
Police were notified of the accident at approximately 3 p.m.
The car’s occupants, whose names were also not released, remained at the scene and co-operated with the police.
The woman was transported to Whitehorse General Hospital by Emergency Medical Services with serious injuries.
She was later medevaced to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Whitehorse General spokeswoman Val Pike said today.
The occupants of the vehicle were not injured in the collision. Speed, alcohol and road conditions were not factors, police have concluded.
They closed the highway for several hours, rerouting traffic along the parallel Centennial Street between MacDonald and Wann roads.
Police wish to thank the members of the public who assisted the pedestrian prior to the arrival of emergency crews.
Police also remind pedestrians to take the necessary precautions in watching for vehicles to keep themselves safe when crossing any roadway. Motorists too are reminded to remain ever more vigilant in looking out for pedestrians.
The incident is still under investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken with investigators is asked to contact the Whitehorse RCMP at 867-667-5555.
