Yukon freestylers were on the national stage once more this season in Quebec for the final Canada Cup slopestyle competition.

The third slopestyle event in the series was held the same weekend as a World Cup big air event in Quebec – as usually the paths of the competitiors are separate and they do not compete at both levels.

But this was an exception for Yukoner Etienne Geoffroy-Gagnon who was invited to participate in the big air event, even with his main discipline being the slopestyle.

In the qualifying round, the top 10 scores secured a spot in the final. Geoffroy-Gagnon finished in 13th out of the 19 participants with a top score of 76.80 to just miss the mark for the final two days down the line.

But that allowed the Yukoner to switch gears to the slopestyle competition in Stoneham – which he wouldn’t have been able to do if he advanced to the big air final.

In the first two Canada Cup events of the season, Geoffroy-Gagnon picked up a first and second place finish and a win in the final event would put him on top of the final slopestyle standings.

In the first run of the two-run final, he scored a 90 to put him in third place out of the 76 competitiors heading into the final run.

In his second run, the Yukoner scored a score of 96.4 – a major improvement from the first run to put him well in the lead.

The two athletes who finished just ahead in the first round were unable to improve on their scores and Geoffroy-Gagnon picked up his second Canada Cup gold of the season.

Luke Smart of B.C. finished second with a score of 93.2.

The victory also led Geoffroy-Gagnon to winning the Toyo Cup, awarded to the most consistent performer overall across all freestyle disciplines. He will receive a $2,500 education bursary for the top prize.

The Toyo Cup winner was joined by two other Yukoners at the final Canada Cup event in Quebec with Niko and Miguel Rodden rounding out their participation in all three events.

Miguel placed 29th with a first run score of 72.8 and his brother Niko finished only a few spots back in 33rd with a score of 70.20.

The busy season continues for Geoffroy-Gagnon this week with the final NorAm slopestyle event also in Quebec.

He will be competing in the qualifiers Friday with the finals set for Saturday.

He is fighting for top spot overall on the NorAm slopestyle circuit and currently sits in first place with a win at Mammoth Mountain earlier in the month. The winner after the final event receives a bid to next season’s World Cup slopestyle events.
