The Yukon’s quest for medals will resume next week at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.

After being shut out from the medal standings in Kamloops, B.C., in 2011, the territory’s top young athletes will have another go in Wood Buffalo, Alta., Aug. 7 to 16.

“We see this as a bit of a building block or precursor to Canada Games,” Yukon chef de mission Trevor Twardochleb told the Star today. “This is probably one of the largest teams we’ve sent to Westerns.”

Fort McMurray will host the majority of the 18 sports and 2,500 athletes.

Other jurisdictions that will participate in the multi-sport tournament are Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Saskatchewan.

A Team Yukon pep rally will be held Monday night at Shipyards Park.

From 6 to 7:30 p.m., athletes will gather for a barbecue, banner signing, team photo and send-off speeches. The public is welcome to attend.

Athletes may range in age from 11 to 23. The 162-members of Team Yukon are listed below.
