All three Yukon paddlers at the national whitewater championships in Barry’s Bay, Ont., will be returning home with gold medals next week.

As of today, Pelly Vincent-Braun had already scored three gold medals in his canoe, while siblings Mael and Luanda Pronovost each earned one in the kayaking categories.

Yukon Canoe and Kayak Club coach Trevor Braun said the wins reveal good things about the state of whitewater paddling in the territory.

“It’s really good for Yukoners,” Braun said when reached by the Star this morning.

On Wednesday, 15-year-old Vincent-Braun earned four medals, including two golds – and the title of Canadian junior champion – after winning the downriver sprint and classic races in his solo canoe.

He also paired up with his father, Trevor Braun, to win bronze in the C-2 downriver classic, and teamed up with Ontario’s Zach Zwanenburg to secure a second bronze in the open category of the C-2 downriver sprint.

Yesterday, the junior duo won gold in their age group’s slalom race.

“All week, every run has been a bit faster for me,” Vincent-Braun said. “I’m pretty proud of myself because everyone that I’m competing against has a way longer training season than I do and they have a proper course to train on.”

Mael Pronovost, 13, earned gold in the cadet category of the downriver kayak sprint Wednesday. He has also picked up a silver in the downriver classic, and bronze in the slalom.

Meanwhile, 10-year-old kayaker Luanda Pronovost earned a gold of her own yesterday in the novice category slalom event.

“It really shows the strength of the Yukon Canoe and Kayak Club’s kayak program,” Braun said, noting both slalom and downriver racing are relatively new to the territory.

Vincent-Braun is not yet sure if his performances will be enough to land him a position with the junior national team, but he remains hopeful.

“I just have to see how everyone else runs, and hopefully my time is fast enough to make the percentage (cutoff) so I can go to worlds next year,” he said.

Following nationals, Vincent-Braun will compete in a Canada Cup freestyle event on the Ottawa River.

Last year, Vincent-Braun earned eight medals – including two gold – at his first national competition in Kananaskis, Alta.
