Two Yukon cyclists emerged from a youth series in Kelowna, B.C., as bronze medallists recently.

Tristan Muir and Hudson Lucier, members of the Whitehorse club U Kon Echelon, both accomplished the feat at the Axel Merckx Youth Cycling Series, held over the Labour Day weekend.

Nine Yukon cyclists attended the event, which consisted of skills training and racing a time trial, criterium and road race.

Competing in the U19 category, Lucier pedalled to a third-place finish in the time trial.

Meanwhile, Muir’s medal came in the very competitive U13 division of the road race.

Coach Trena Irving said both performances were impressive, as Muir is currently in his first year of competitive cycling, while Lucier has never competed outside of the territory on his bike.

Lucier also impressed coach Irving with his kindness after winning a pair of Oakley glasses in a prize draw.

“Hudson is a wonderful ambassador of the Yukon and gave his glasses to a boy from B.C. who had no glasses,” Irving said.

In the criterium, each of the Yukon riders “worked hard and pushed themselves to their limits,” but none were able to medal.

There were a couple of crashes during the event – one that included Yukoner Micah Taggart-Cox – but all participants were OK.

Alongside the medals, another highlight for the Yukoners was the chance to meet Watson Lake cyclist Zach Bell who was in Kelowna for the weekend.

The Whitehorse club was ecstatic to welcome Bell, who has been a big supporter of the young Yukoners.

Bell’s Olympic coach, Richard Wooles, was volunteering at the camp, as were a variety of other high-profile coaches, including former Olympic mountain biker Lesli Tomlinson, Axel Merckx, Ron Hayman, Kurt Innes and Laura Brown.

Other Yukon cyclists at the camp included David Jackson, Cayla Jackson, Lucas Taggart-Cox, Cauis Taggart-Cox, Shea Hoffman and Ava Irving-Staley.
