Yukon’s top cross-country skier officially opened the 2016 Haywood Ski Nationals on Saturday morning.

Flanked by dignitaries, Emily Nishikawa gave the country’s top competition the green light.

“I would like to declare the 2016 Haywood Ski Nationals officially open,” she said to applause during the opening ceremonies held at the Whitehorse club’s ski stadium.

“I’d like to wish everyone a very warm welcome to my hometown of Whitehorse,” the 26-year-old added. “I’m so excited for the opportunity to race here in Whitehorse.

“I wish everyone a good competition, a great experience, and most of all a lot of fun.”

Premier Darrell Pasloski welcomed the hundreds of ski stars to Yukon Territory, acknowledging their hard work and dedication to their craft.

“I want to thank the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club for all their hard work and dedication to put the Haywood Ski Nationals on,” he said, lauding the 200-plus volunteers.

“This could not happen without all the volunteers. It doesn’t matter where you are in the country, to have a healthy, strong sporting community, you need volunteers.”

Kwanlin Koyotes Ski Club coach Gary Bailie blessed the proceedings on behalf of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation.

A parade of colours preceded the speeches.
