Once again, the arrival of snow has Yukoners packing away their running gear in anticipation of a long winter.

The unofficial start of the season will take place next Saturday, with the annual ski swap at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club.

Set for Oct. 18, hundreds of bargain hunters are expected to be up early to get in line for the 9 a.m. opening.

A winter fair will begin at 8:30, giving swappers a preview of what’s to come this season.

Information for alpine, snowboard, Nordic and alpine touring will also be available at the club.

There will be dealers, clubs, and local businesses on hand to answer questions and show off the latest in equipment.

Organizations on hand include Icycle Sport, Coast Mountain Sports, Up North Adventures, Mt. Sima and the Avalanche Association.

Meanwhile, the ski swap will take place from 9 a.m. to noon.

All kinds of winter sports gear will be up for sale, including cross-country skis, downhill skills, hockey equipment, snowboards, snow bikes, winter camping gear, winter clothing and more.

The key to a great ski swap is to have a lot of good equipment to sell, the club said in a press release.

Whitehorse residents are encouraged to check their closets, attics, garages, and basements for winter gear that can be re-used.

Bring it to the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre at 1 Sumanik Drive on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday between 6 and 8 p.m. next week.

Any equipment that is in good condition and valued at $5 or more can be sold at the swap.

There is a $2 charge for each tag and the ski club will keep 20 per cent of the sale price as part of its fund-raising efforts.

A large group of local runners will end their season in style on Sunday at the 35th Victoria Marathon.

About 100 Whitehorse runners will participate in the event in the B.C. capital, with Air North even chartering a plane for the occasion.

On Tuesday, the local running season ended with the Last Gasp, put on by Athletics Yukon.

A small amount of runners took to the Millennium Trail one more time to round out the weekly Sportslife series.
