Jeff Wiggins strung together two solid rounds in Richmond, B.C., this week and has qualified for nationals.

The Mountain View Golf Club professional shot rounds of 74 and 73 to tie for fifth at the 2015 PGA of BC Club Professional Championship.

Held Monday and Tuesday at the Richmond Country Club, the event featured 38 of the province’s top golf professionals.

Lindsay Bernakevitch of the Victoria Golf Club earned the victory, shooting 4-under to take home $2,700.

Wiggins, 37, finished tied for fifth with Scott Rodgers of Meadow Gardens Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, B.C.

Wiggins was quite pleased with his 3-over-par performance, which earned him $850.

The Richmond Country Club was in pristine condition, playing as a tight, well-bunkered course with small, quick greens, he said.

“It was my first PGA of BC event this season and there was a lot on the line,” he told the Star in an email.

The professional championship is a difficult event, requiring clean golf, he explained.

“Any big mistake will cost a player severely,” said Wiggins. “I hit some really good golf shots this week and worked the ball off the tee well.

“I stayed aggressive and made putts coming down the stretch. I haven’t played enough golf this year to be in a ‘champions’ mindset, but I did expect a solid performance.”

Wiggins said much is owed to his team at the Whitehorse club, located in Whistlebend.

“Our championship golf course here has the foundation to be a spectacular training facility for competition development amongst all golf athletes,” he said.

“I would hope that in the near future, we can build on that foundation and attract more athletes to the game, and provide them with an even better facility to work and train.”

Wiggins said a top-five finish and qualification into the 2015 Canadian PGA Club Professional Championship in November were his performance goals this week.

Personally, he hoped to maintain his reputation within the PGA of BC as a top player while moving up the Canadian PGA player rankings.

Wiggins is now ranked 149th in Canada.

With all goals checked off, the Yukoner will now turn his focus on nationals, which will be held Nov. 15 to 18 at the Verrado Golf Club in Buckeye, Ariz.
