Three Whitehorse high schools took home some hardware this past weekend at the Dawson Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

The Vanier Catholic Secondary School Crusaders took home the gold in both the junior girls and boys divisions.

Both teams faced off against the Warriors from F.H. Collins Secondary School in the finals, with the boys winning two sets to one, and the girl’s team winning in two straight.

The junior teams are back in regular season action gearing towards the Yukon Schools Athletic Association Championships Nov. 16-18 hosted at Porter Creek Secondary School and F.H. Collins.

In Grade 8 action, it was the Carmacks team from Tantalus Community School who took the gold.

In the senior boys division, the Dawson Invitational defending champion Porter Creek Rams were off to a slow start this season, 0-2 in Super Volley play.

But that changed when they reached the tournament, winning seven sets and losing only one in pool play to Vanier.

The Rams qualified first out of the five teams in the tournament — two from Dawson and the three schools from Whitehorse.

Rams head coach Derrick Bilodeau said the team has improved their play throughout the season leading up to the tournament.

They met the Crusaders from Vanier in the tournament final, who are undefeated in Super Volley league play, and won in two straight sets.

I think that our team is well-rounded,” Bilodeau said following the tournament. “There are no glaring spaces in team that are of concern.”

Bilodeau, who has been a coach for the team for six seasons, said the team stepped up as they only had seven players throughout the whole tournament, meaning only one substitution was available.

The team only has eight players on the roster to begin with, Bilodeau explained, and one of the players was hurt and couldn’t play in the tournament.

“We started to really play well as the team passing really well, blocking really well, and our defence really stepped up,” he said.

The Rams will now look to get on the Super Volley win column, hosting the regular season finale tonight against the Crusaders and tomorrow against the Warriors.

The game against the Crusaders will be a rematch of the Dawson final and will see the Rams try to break Vanier’s unbeaten record in the season.

The Rams won the Super Volley title last season as well, beating the F.H. Collins Warriors in the final and ending a six-year drought in the process.

On the girls side, the F.H. Collins Warriors continued their winning ways to take the Dawson tournament in straight sets.

They are all undefeated in the regular season, which will be put to the test when they visit the Rams tomorrow in their final game.

Then it’s on to the playoffs with the semifinals set for Monday and the Super Volley finals on Tuesday night at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

The Crusaders on the boy’s side have already qualified for the finals with their perfect record.

On the girl’s side, the Warriors will hope to stay undefeated in their final game against the Rams.

The Crusaders are looking for their first win in Super Volley action as they take on the Rams tonight.

Action kicks off at 5 p.m. with the girl’s game followed by the boy’s game around 6:30.
