In their final road event of the season, U Kon Echelon cyclists were able to learn from B.C.’s best youth coaches at the Axel Merckx Youth Camp in Kelowna, B.C.

On Sept. 1 and 3, three young Yukoners and their coach travelled south for the camp, which is aimed at athlete development for cyclists ages 11 to 18.

In addition to learning, Ava Irving-Staley, Johna Irving-Staley and Clayton Chapman also raced.

“Results were great,” said coach Trena Irving in an email to the Star.

Ava was second in the time trial, criterium and the road race.

Chapman was second in the road race, third in the criterium and fourth in the time trial.

Johna was second in an eliminator race.

“[He] sprinted to the front and then stayed there,” said Irving. “Although that race didn’t count for medals, it was impressive as he did a breakaway and made it stick.”

This fall, U Kon Echelon riders will transition onto mountain bikes and then head indoors for spinning or explore on fat bikes outside over the winter.
