Turkey scored its first-ever run at a men’s world softball championship during their game against Great Britain Wednesday afternoon.

Leadoff batter Ramazan Alacaoz got on base on a drop third strike and was able to make his way to third base on a put-out and throwing error.

With two outs, Oguz Ates hit an infield single, which allowed Alacaoz to score.

Murat Pazan also hit a single, but the inning ended with Great Britain up 7-1.

This is Turkey’s first time at the men’s world softball championships and they are 0-7 in pool B. They dropped their morning match against the Czech Republic 20-0 and will finish eighth in the pool. The top four advance to the championship round.

Ahead of their first match last Friday against New Zealand, shortstop Ege Colak spoke to the Star.

When asked about playing in the world championships for the first time, he said, “This is a really exciting question because I did play baseball since 11 years, but this is the first time we play in the softball, so it’s good to be in with this U.S.A, New Zealand, Canada, they are very hard opponents. We will try the best we can do in this field.”

Great Britain (1-5) got their first win of the tournament against Turkey, scoring 24 runs and ending the game after three innings.

Great Britain (1-5) takes on Venezuela (5-1) at 2 p.m. today for their final pool match.

Great Britain looks to have sealed up seventh place, with Venezuela sits in a three-way tie with Japan and New Zealand for first place.
