A last-minute need to fill up the Top-Shelf Titans’ roster ahead of the Whitehorse Women’s Hockey Association’s (WWHA) Jamboree paid off for a Teslin hockey player.

Jocelyn Boutilier helped the team to an unbeaten tournament record and netted two goals in the final against the Break-Away Bandits.

Boutilier said she got the call to play the night before the tournament and was happy that she made it in.

“I love the game. I live for the game,” she said following her team’s final win.

“My passion is hockey and I’ll never give up.”

Boutilier has played at the Arctic Winter Games, Canada Winter Games and North American Indigenous Games before. This was her first time competing in the WWHA Jamboree.

“This is very good hockey. I think all the teams were pretty even,” she said. “I’m going to encourage all the women I know to come sign up because it’s a lot of fun.”

The Top-Shelf Titans entered Saturday’s final against the Break-Away Bandits undefeated.

They got on the board early with an unassisted goal from Nikki Belanger.

The Bandits tied it up with a goal from Jessica Pumphrey, followed by another goal just over a minute later from Jessica Nadeau (assisted by Brook Pollard-Norris and Erin Peacock). With 4:05 remaining in the first period, Christine Gardner tied it up for the Top-Shelf Titans to go into the second matched evenly at 2-2.

The second period was a showcase of the Titans’ firepower, as they scored three goals to make it 5-2. The goals came from Boutilier (2) and Belanger.

“I thought they were amazing plays from my amazing line that I was on,” said Boutilier of her two contributions.

A late attempt came in the third with 49 seconds remaining (Laura Grieve), but the score remained in the Titans’ favour and they finished the tournament undefeated.

The Hat-Trick Heroines faced the Wrap-Around Warriors in the bronze medal game, after the Warriors lost a shoot-out to the Bandits for a spot in the finals.

The Warriors won the game 6-4 with goals from Denica Christiansen, Helen Christiansen, Chantelle Rivest (2), Karen Pearson and Cheryl Rivest.

Heroines goals were from Kris Anderson, Amy Smith, Alison Perrin and Jess Wood.

Regular season play returns tomorrow night as H&R Block takes on Hvactech in the early game and Cardinal Contracting goes against North Star Mini Storage in the late game.
