For the ladies playing at this weekend’s slo-pitch tournament, it was all about testing the waters as a team.

With relatively few chances to play as a team ahead of nationals, the Sistas and the Yukon Titans relish every opportunity to play together.

Titans pitcher Valerie Voxall has had relatively few chances to play with the team that represented Yukon at last year’s nationals.

“This is sort of our first time playing with this group of girls together,” said Voxall.

“It was awesome that this tournament got organized because it’s good practice for us leading up to nationals in August.”

Under a bluebird sky, The Sistas won the final matchup 23-8 against the Titans.

“We were patient when we needed to be and we just worked on our hitting,” said Sistas’ Marcie Stenzig.

For a team aiming to gel, the Sistas had a good game at the plate.

“They found a lot of holes and were just hitting them where we weren’t,” said Voxall.

As the weekend neared its close, the players started to feel more cohesive.

“We had each other’s back and just really worked as a team,” said Stenzig. “It really worked in our favour.”

Soon the teams will enter the final stretch ahead of August’s nationals.

“It’s going to be more about playing together honestly,” said Stenzig. “We need more games and we’re learning how everyone else plays. To gel as a team you really have to play together and get to know each other.”

The Sistas will try and schedule a few exhibition games for extra team practice as well as play at Dustball.

The Titans, as well, will look for some more practice as a team.

“We want to make a good showing come August so that all our fans can be proud of us,” said Voxall. “Same with the Sistas. They’re going to want to make a good showing in front of a home crowd.”
