The Carmacks Ridge Run organized by the Tantalus School was no less popular last Friday than it has been over the last four decades.

School principal Morgan Douglas-Alexander estimated this week approximately 450 students from 10 Yukon schools attended the annual Ridge Run.

“We have elementary schools, F.H. Collins came, Vanier, Jack Hulland.” Morgan said. “We had kids from Pelly, from Ross River, from Dawson, we had kids from all over.”

Morgan said the size of Friday’s 41st running of the event was about on par with other years, with the exception of last year’s 40th anniversary race which drew in some 700 student runners.

“We have the entire community involved and of course all of my staff work on the race, at the results table, up on the ridge and at the end,” Morgan said.

She said government agencies like wildlife management, the Emergency Measures Organization and Wildland Fire Management are also involved.

Some students like to run it because they’ve done it every year and others run against the clock, Douglas-Alexander said.

The Tantalus School provides ribbons to the top three runners in each category, which includes 3-km and 5-km courses for both girls and boys – and some teachers too.

Female:

• Novice 3-km (six and seven year olds) – Kira Cross of Grey Mountain Primary finished first in a time of 33 minutes and 30 seconds;

We will be traveling to Carmacks this spring and if possible would like to take part in the race. Is this possible and if so can you send me the registration details?
Thank,
