Squash star earns third straight tournament win

Mustafa Syed remains unbeaten on the squash tournament circuit this season.

The 17-year-old swept up his third straight title last Saturday at the Darkest Night squash tournament in a tightly- played A final versus rival Grayson Peters.

Syed eked out the 3-1 victory with game scores of 15-13, 14-16, 16-14 and 16-14.

Prior to last weekend’s tournament, Syed helped lead Mr. Black to victory at the Reservoir Dogs event in November.

And in October, Syed did not lose a game en route to the Early Bird tournament title – the first meet on the Squash Yukon calendar each year.

In February, Syed will lead the Yukon squash team to the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.

In B division action, Glenn Rudman edged rival Emilie Herdes 3-2 in a hard-fought final, while Coleman Newell took down Sana Syed 3-2 to earn the C division title.

Other tournament winners included Everett Igobwa. who won the D division 3-1 over Mackenzie Cameron, while Ivan Johnson claimed the junior division title.

Meanwhile, in local league play, Assante continued to stretch its lead in Div. 1 action Tuesday, defeating Better Bookkeeping 23-10. All four members of the league-leading club picked up wins, though three of the four took all five sets to decide.

Drew Osborne beat Danny MacDonald 3-2, Michael Tilbrook shut out Lori Muir 3-0, Mark Tubman edged Sam Penner 3-2 and Ben Grundmanis clipped Gareth Earl 3-2 to complete the sweep.

Assante now has 169 points on the season, 35 points up on idle Earls Restaurant which continues to hold down second place.

Other action saw Outside The Cube hammer Yukon Tree Services 20-9 on the strength of wins by Chris Toleman,
Tony Radford and substitute player Peter Mather. Keegan Kwok had the lone win for Yukon Tree Services.

Aurora Geosciences also downed TSL Contractors 19-9 with each of Marc Jubinville, Doug Thorseth and Syed earning 3-0 shutout wins. TSL player Jason Steele also earned a 3-0 win in the loss.

As for the Div. 2 league, Yukon Brewing continues to lead the standings following a 15-12 win over Coast High Country Inn last night.

The hard-fought battle saw Mattaeus Geisler and substitute player Ravi Bhullar earn victories for Yukon Brewing, while Aaron Nicholson and Andrew Bielz responded with wins for Coast.

Second-place Bluewave Energy lost to Electrical Shop by the slimmest of margins, 16-15. Sam Oettli and David Buckler took home wins for Electrical Shop, while Bluewave’s Scott Burrell and substitute Jesse Koeller earned victories despite their overall team loss.

The third game saw Yukon Transportation Museum sweep Sterling Insurance 23-10 courtesy of wins by Janna Power, Jordy Walker, Todd Pilgrim and substitute Will Chetcuti.
