A group of young Yukon soccer players got their first taste of tournament action in Burnaby, B.C., earlier this month.

The U10 Yukon Strikers squad finished 2-2 at the Burnaby Girls Soccer Club’s Remembrance Day Tournament held Nov. 11.

Players making the trip were Sophia Lang, Marin Lewis, Jordan Minifie, Emery Twardochleb, Mia Warren and Emma Watson.

Coach Derric Lewis said it was “exciting to watch the girls thrive, compete and grow in confidence” at the one-day tournament.

The event featured 75 teams and more than 1,000 players, who participated in games, a skills challenge and a shootout competition.

The team filled out their roster with three girls from Burnaby.

Wiggins misses the cut at golf nationals

Jeff Wiggins’ run at nationals didn’t go quite as planned.

After shooting rounds of 79 and 89 (+24), the Mountain View Golf and Country Club professional missed the cut for the first time in his career.

Ontario golfer Danny King, 48, won the 2015 Canadian Club Professional Championship, held at Arizona’s Verrado Golf Club Nov. 15 to 18. King finished 11-under after three rounds.

Wiggins, 37, declined to comment on his results. Last year, he finished tied for 58th at nationals.

Galloway helps Heat claim national silver

Camille Galloway and the UBC Okanagan Heat earned a national silver medal at cross-country college nationals Nov. 14.

Galloway and her Heat teammates won the medal for their overall placement in the five-kilometre championships in Brockville, Ont.

The Yukon nursing student was the second member of the squad to cross the line, finishing 23rd overall in 20:13.3.

It marked the second straight year the Heat earned a medal at the Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association Cross Country National Championships.

No Fulda Challenge this winter: organizer

There will be no Fulda Challenge held in Yukon this winter.

Longtime organizer Holger Bergold told the Star that the German tire manufacturer will no longer push the Fulda brand, but rather organize a promotional event for Goodyear and Dunlop.

Bergold said he will do his “upmost” to see that event held in Yukon.

The Fulda Challenge has been hosted in the territory since 2000, with celebrity participants competing in winter activities that promoted the tire brand.

Ryan represents Yukon at masters swim meet

The Yukon Graylings swim club was represented at the UBC Masters Swim Club meet in Vancouver Sunday.

Victoria Ryan swam the 100 IM, placing first in her age group. It marked Ryan’s first meet since giving birth to her third child earlier this year.

“I participated mainly because I love the sport and the atmosphere at these meets,” Ryan said.

The Yukon club continues to increase in size and has swelled to about 15 members – twice as large as last season.

Stephanie Dixon is the team’s coach.
