Local speedskaters continued their upward trend in Edmonton last weekend.

A group from the Whitehorse Rapids Speed Skating Club hit the road to the Alberta capital to participate in the Edmonton Fall Classic 2015 – Ability Meet.

Tristan Muir, Michael Ritchie and the Taggart-Cox brothers – Caius, Lucas and Micah – all took part, earning 13 personal-best times out of a possible 20.

The meet came on the heels of a Nov. 22 event held locally that saw 32 personal-best performances.

Yukon Brewing keeps winning streak alive

Yukon Brewing overcame Pepsi in a scrappy encounter in old-timer soccer action Saturday.

Having raced to a 4-1 lead, many pundits believed there would be an avalanche of goals in the second half, but the game ended 4-2.

Getting the goals for the Brew were Rich Potter, Jurgen Korn, Jim Brown and Andy Todd, with David Strachan and Ben Mercier replying for Pepsi.

In the late game at the Canada Games Centre, Quest Computers and Klondike Business Solutions tied 3-3, with the Quest team putting in a much-improved performance.

Quest was indebted to John MacPhail (who missed last week due to his Spruce Bog commitments), returning favourite Guliano Rayo, and Travis Schommer who got a goal each.

Danny Macdonald continued his march to the Golden Boot title with another goal, while Kurt Brinsli and Adil Khalik also scored for KBS.

First mushing race of season cancelled

The season-opening race for Yukon’s mushing circuit was called off Sunday.

The board of the Dog Powered Sports Association of the Yukon cited warm weather conditions and not enough snow to adequately hold hooks as factors in the decision.

The season is now expected to begin with a Twister race Dec. 13 in Mount Lorne.

Sport Yukon awards moved to February

The 2015 Sport Yukon awards will not be handed out until next year.

Typically handed in out in late November, a scheduling change will see the event take place Feb. 4, 2016 at 7 p.m.

The event will acknowledge Yukon athletic accomplishments between Nov. 1, 2014 and Oct. 31, 2015, said Sport Yukon executive director Tracey Bilsky.

She noted the organization is attempting to avoid the Christmas party season, and will reassess next year.

The 40th annual event will be held at the Yukon Convention Centre.
