Special Olympics Yukon is recruiting sport volunteers for four sport programs being offered this fall and winter.

Programs include: athletics (track and field), soccer, bowling and rhythmic gymnastics.

Special Olympics Yukon enriches the lives of Yukoners with an intellectual disability through sport. Over 90 Yukon athletes train and compete in the sports they love.

“Coaching athletes with an intellectual disability is a very rewarding experience,” said Serge Michaud, the group’s executive director.

“I began my own journey with Special Olympics as a volunteer coach. I saw how much fun the athletes were having and the personal joy I felt in helping them reach their sport goals.”

No experience is necessary, just the willingness to help athletes succeed in sport. Training is provided to each sport volunteer.

If you would like to help with one of the weekly sport programs or want to learn more, contact program director Brettanie Deal-Porter at 668-6511 or bdealporter@specialolympicsyukon.ca.

Recently, the local club benefitted from the Whitehorse Tim Hortons Smile Cookie Campaign, which raised $6,343. Athletes putting smiles on cookies were Marvin Hall, Jessica Pruden, Albert Bill, Trevor Beemish and Alanna Dene.
