The talented Lindsay sisters ensured the Yukon made its presence known at the Swim B.C. AAA Long Course Championship in Victoria, earlier this month.

Despite having only three swimmers at the meet – which saw 700 competing in total – the Whitehorse Glacier Bears brought home five medals from the event, which took place July 2 to 7.

While the Yukon team did have seven swimmers qualify at the AA meet two weeks earlier, only three athletes were able to attend the AAA competition.

Cassis Lindsay went on to win two silver medals, while her younger sister Rennes scored three bronze. Each of the medals came in freestyle swim events.

Cassis Lindsay, 13, won silver in the 50 Free and 100 Free.

While she is a very fast swimmer, Glacier Bears coach Malwina Bukszowana said the two are still working to tweak technique before Cassis heads to her first national meet later this month.

The Canadian Age Group Championships will begin tomorrow in Winnipeg, and run until July 28. Cassis will be the lone Yukon representative.

Meanwhile in Victoria, Cassis’ 11-year-old sister Rennes earned third-place finishes in the 50, 100 and 800 Free. Along the way, she also broke a club record in the 200 Fly by 13 seconds, achieving the national time standard for her age group.

Brooklyn Massie was the other local swimmer at the meet.

Bukszowana praised the 11-year-old for her hard work, despite the lack of results in Victoria.

“Her 400 Free and 800 Free events were very well paced,” the coach said. “There is a lot of potential in that girl.”

On top of the results, the long course meet also taught the swimmers some lessons – and not always the easy way.

“Swimming, as a very demanding and fair sport, shows us that as much effort we put into it, the same we will get out of it,” said Bukszowana.
