Shootout loss spells end to Kilrich’s stellar year

Medicine Chest’s Shawn Kinsella scored the only goal in a shootout Sunday, putting a swift end to one of the best seasons in Whitehorse Oldtimer Hockey League history.
The 2-1 loss eliminated a Kilrich club that went 35-1-6 in the regular season – a record widely thought to be the best in the league’s tenure.
EDI handed Kilrich their first playoff loss last Wednesday at the Canada Games Centre. The league playoffs are a double-elimination format.
While Kinsella provided the season-ending heroics, Medicine Chest goalie Eugene Johnson was perfect in the shootout, stopping all three Kilrich shooters: Colin Nash, Kerry Pettitt and Brian Currie.
Kinsella and Pettitt had each scored in regular time to push the game to the breakaway contest.
In other games Sunday, Air North eliminated Yukon Inn with a 3-1 victory and the Klondyke Dental Molars edged EDI 3-2 in overtime to remain undefeated in playoff action.
The Molars clinched a berth in the final game with their win over EDI.
Mike Blower played hero in that game, scoring twice – including the game-winner – as Klondyke Dental came back from a 2-0 deficit midway through the game.
Air North and Medicine Chest will now square off Wednesday night, with the winner battling EDI Thursday for the right to face the Molars in next Monday’s championship game.
The team that earns the opportunity to face Klondyke Dental will need to beat them twice in order to claim the league title.
Last year, the Firth Rangers beat EDI to win the playoffs.
