Yukon runners will once again flock south this weekend for a season-ending race in Victoria.

More than 85 locals will head to the British Columbia capital to take part in the 36th annual GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon.

Carcross runner Denise McHale will run the full marathon, while Logan Roots will compete in the half.

Other local standouts Lindsay Carson and Darby McIntyre will participate in the eight-kilometre event.

Carson is the defending champ in the women’s short distance race.

Also competing will be Team Ross and Finn, a squad of local runners raising funds for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) research.

A local sendoff will take place tonight on the Millennium Trail, featuring local brothers Ross and Finn Beaulieu, who suffer from DMD.

The event will begin at Rotary Peace Park at 5:30.

The Yukon team is attempting to raise $20,000 for the cause.

Last month, $12,000 was raised for the cause at an ’80s charity dance held at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre.

Meanwhile, the sun has nearly set on the local running season.

Fifteen runners gathered at F.H. Collins Secondary School last night for the final Sports Experts Fun Run/Walk, known as the Last Gasp.

Special Olympics runner McIntyre led the field around the Millennium Trail from start to finish.

The trail running group will meet for the final Coast Mountain Sports Trail Run on Oct. 18 at the Chadburn Lake parking lot.

After that, the local running scene will go dormant until the Winter Solstice Run Dec. 19.

Michelle and I would like to thank all the runners, family, friends, Yukon Brewing, and others for your continued love and support in our families battle to END DUCHENE. All funds raised target research initiatives and we are excited to inform that some of these initiatives are very promising and include an approved drug now availuable (in the UK)!
