An ace and four near-misses were enough for Dan Reimer to win the latest Yukon disc golf tournament.

In what marked the final large event of the local season, Reimer led the way, eventually earning himself a bag of Discraft merchandise including eight new discs and a Supercolor Buzzz trophy disc.

Ben Monkman finished second, but only following a playoff round after four players tied for second with one ace and three metal hits.

Carole Dumont won the women’s event with two metal hits while Kayden Smith earned the U10 boys trophy with a single hole in one.

In total, 32 players competed, ranging from novice to experienced.

“The Ace Race is a fun event that helps disc golf grow by introducing new players to the joys of the sport,” said Whitehorse Disc Golf Association president Ryan Norquay.

“Each year, disc golfers from around the world gather at their local courses for one purpose: to throw aces. No putting, no approaching ... just runnin’ at the chains.”

The holes are shortened and everyone throws the same disc – a brand-new Discraft prototype. The disc is easy to throw and is developed for the event. Filling out the player pack is a dri-fit T-shirt, a mini marker disc, among other paraphernalia.

A total of 355 Ace Race events took place world-wide.

The global tournament serves to attract new players to the game with a player pack worth two times the entry fee.

Each player received two Ace Race discs, courtesy of Discraft.

Norquay said he was pleased with the professional feel of the event, which concluded with a barbecue lunch and an awards ceremony.
