CARTWHEELING AD NAUSEAM – Emily King performs cartwheels during the Polarettes Gymnastics Club’s Gym-A-Thon Saturday. Gymnasts were challenged to do as many cartwheels or somersaults in 45 minutes as they could to raise money for the club. The club raised $6,450. King did 1,350 cartwheels.

With the tunes blaring, young Polarette gymnasts banged out the last few cartwheels and somersaults before their 45 minutes was up.

Around the Polarettes Gymnastics Club in Riverdale on Saturday afternoon, about a dozen young gymnasts performed their flips in their own space, invisible rectangles on the spring-loaded blue mats that allowed them the room to perform their tricks.

Even as the final 10 minutes dragged out, Emily King kept her form, legs straight, toes pointed as she added to her total cartwheels. As soon as one leg landed, she was wheeling back the other direction as a volunteer diligently knotched out her totals.

At the end of 45 minutes, a staggering 1,350 knotches decorated the page, each representing a cartwheel from the young gymnast.

But her total wasn’t even the highest. Kate Koepke had that honour, performing 1,472 skills in 45 minutes.

More than 50 gymnasts participated in the Polarette’s Flip for the Future: Gym-A-Thon fundraiser, an idea imported along with head coach Kimberly Jones, who is just shy of her one-year anniversary with the club.

“We just wanted to promote gymnastics in the community,” said Jones, who also noted the gym-a-thon was a different way fundraiser from selling raffle tickets.

Jones hopes that the $6,450 the club raised in the gym-a-thon can be put towards improvements and upgrades around the gymnastics facility.
