The Air North Challenge has returned to the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club.

The event sponsored by the Yukon’s airline challenges skiers to explore the club’s trails in February.

One lucky skier will win the grand prize of two tickets to one of Air North’s destinations while various draw prizes will also be awarded March 1.

With the majority of skiers using the popular Dog and Copper Trail and Selwyn’s Loop, the thought is they are missing out on some great skiing on Lower Valley, Powerline, Raven and the rest of the 85 kilometres of groomed trail and 20 km of single track.

This year’s challenge theme is “Whitehorse Ski Club History.”

The challenge will be to find all the history questions along the trails and punch the control card along the way.

There are categories for skiers young and old, novice to expert. The control points are marked with the familiar orange and white orienteering controls. A unique punch and question will identify each control point.

The “History 101” category is for skiers who do not want to venture far and would like to stay on the easier trails. They will have to find five controls and answer the questions associated with each on green trails between the chalet and Crossroads Junction.

The “History Minor” category is for intermediate skiers.  They will need to find 10 controls and correctly answer the questions on all green and blue trails as far as Best Chance.

The “History Major” category is for experienced skiers who want to ski all the trails. They will have to find 20 controls located throughout the trail system and identify the airport codes.

A special category for snowshoers, “Prehistoric History,” will include the single-track trails. Snowshoers will have to find five controls and correctly answer the questions.
