The Whitehorse Lynx female basketball program took a big step last weekend.

Three Lynx teams competed at the 3D Western Invitational Basketball Tournament in Abbotsford, B.C.

The Lynx players, all from Whitehorse, ranged in age from 11 and 16 and competed in two divisions at the tournament.

This was the first time the girls have played in a tournament and, for a number of girls, it also marked the first time they played in a real game.

While game scores were not in the Yukon’s favour, the event was dubbed “a fantastic learning opportunity” by Lynx brain trust.

The girls improved with each game and there were breakout performances on each team.

The Lynx basketball program is a club program in its fourth year of operation, offering spring and fall basketball training for young women.

The program continues to grow with 50 girls playing in the 2015 spring training program.
