The best season of Landon Kulych’s golf career ended Sunday with one more trip to the winner’s circle.

The 27-year-old Whitehorse native shot rounds of 71 – which included a five-under 31 on the back nine – and 74 at the Mountain View Golf Course Club Championships last weekend, held at the 18-hole course in Whistle Bend.

His final score of 145 bested defending champion and tournament runner-up Phil Mullin by four strokes.

Kulych fulfilled each of his goals for the season: winning the Yukon Golf Championships, qualifying for the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in Toronto, and finally taking the club crown.

“This is by far my best season,” Kulych said. “This is far beyond my expectations.”

Kulych said the win was his sixth in this particular tournament, also noting his season wouldn’t have been possible without the fine work by the golf course’s grounds crew and pros and the support of the local golf association.

Ken Taylor shot a two-round 165 to take the senior men’s title, while Natasha Bilodeau earned the women’s championship with a combined score of 221, two strokes ahead of Elaine Sumner.

Bryce Anderson shot a two-round 168 to win the junior title, finishing nine strokes up on runner-up Luke McGrath.

In total, 65 golfers competed for the club’s crystal jug trophy. The tournament is based on handicap scores, with players grouped accordingly.

The club will host its annual One Club Wonder Invitational Sept. 12 before its closing scramble set for Sept. 19.

Earlier this month, Kulych, Mullin and James McGrath represented the territory at the national amateur championships.

While none of the Yukoners made the cut, Mullin carded the top Yukon round, pencilling in a 74 after day one.

The team finished last in the Willingdon Cup standings, watching as British Columbia earned victory by shooting an even-par 286. The Yukon threesome shot a combined 33-over.

Since 1927, the trophy has been awarded to the team with the lowest score after the first 36 holes of the national amateur championship. The top two daily scores from each round count.

Meanwhile, Meadow Lakes Golf and Country Club recently hosted a charity golf tournament benefitting the Children’s Wish Foundation.

The foursome of Michael Fraser, Shane Lyle, Cory Waters and Alex Peech combined to shoot the tournament low score.
