Preparations for the 2016 Canada 55+ Games have ratcheted up a notch.

A shuffleboard and carpet bowling tournament was held at the Canada Games Centre, Friday and Saturday, as Team Yukon begins looking ahead to the national senior games in Brampton, Ont., in August.

The Knight Shufflers – David Knight, Edna Knight and Red Hall – won the shuffleboard competition, ahead of the Shufflers and Team Dolly.

In carpet bowling, meanwhile, the Faro Wits finished ahead of Tom’s Torpedoes to earn first place.

The Tagish Trumpeters and Team Lister tied for third.

The Faro squad consists of Michelle Vainio, Marilyn Boyle, Doris Unruh and Sally Baker.

Nearly 100 Yukon seniors have indicated interest in attending the Canada 55+ Games.

“This is the earliest and most enthusiastic response we have ever had to our ‘I Might Go’ forms,” said ElderActive Recreation Association president Hank Leenders of the event’s pre-registration package.

“Our membership is growing due in part to our participation in the Canada 55+ Games. We expect well over a hundred Yukon seniors to be part of our team in August, which is great, considering we have the longest distance to travel.”

A Team Yukon organizing committee has been meeting monthly since September to prepare for the games.

ElderActive and the organizing committee receive support from the Sport and Recreation branch of the Yukon government.

Two co-chefs, Pamela Bangart and Marg White, have volunteered to lead the team.
