Overcoming weather and scheduling challenges, Klondike Rib and Salmon won the Women’s A division during Dustball last weekend.

Of their big 17-person roster, 15 of their players were also on co-ed teams, said team manager Marcie Stenzig.

“It was very challenging to do rosters,” she said.

But the team worked together and players filled their roles. When they were on the bench, they were loud and when they were in the field, they were on.

“We all worked as a team,” she said.

Klondike Rib and Salmon, formerly known as the Sistas, beat the AFD Titans 15-13 in the final on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

“We did come out pretty strong and then our bats got quiet for a bit, but luckily we held onto them, brought them back in the later innings,” said Stenzig.

“I think some nerves set in,” said team rep Diane Stewart.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Titans held a huddle on the pitcher’s mound as they tried to mount a comeback.

In the end, it wasn’t enough as Klondike Rib and Salmon held them off in the bottom of the inning to secure the Dustball win.

“We all just had to settle down, take one out at a time and just stay in the game,” said Stenzig. “We’re pretty excited with the win.”

With no women’s league in Whitehorse, Dustball is the only local opportunity for women’s teams to play together.

Tough weather – the tournament started off cold and rainy before Sunday’s sunshine – and scheduling challenges aside, the women love playing together.

“This is the only time we get to play together,” said Stewart. “It’s awesome.”
