Junior rangers from across the North will compete at the sixth annual National Marksmanship Championship in Edmonton this week.
Teams from Carcross, Tuktoyaktuk, NWT and Taloyoak, NU will represent the 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol at the championships.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for these young Canadians to enhance their exceptional skills, build self-discipline and confidence while promoting traditional cultures and lifestyles," Brig.-Gen. Kelly Woiden, who is in command of the national cadet and junior Canadian rangers support group said in a press release.
The junior Canadian rangers receive training in the safe handling and firing of the Daisy 853C Air Rifle, which they use in the competition.
The 4th Canadian Ranger Patrol will host the championships at CFB Edmonton.
“I look forward to some outstanding shooting,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Tim Byers, commanding officer of the 4th Canadian Ranger Patrol Group. “The biggest benefits for the JCRs are their development of marksmanship and safe weapon-handling skills, as these will be used throughout their lives back home."
The competition started yesterday and will run until May 19.
