The Yukon sent a strong team to the BC Junior Road Championships last weekend.

The team of seven turned heads at the event, which had coaches from other clubs impressed with the group lead by Trena Irving.

“They said, ‘Wow, you’ve sure brought a strong team down’ and ‘Your riders are doing very well in this race,’” said Irving.

Three U Kon Echelon juniors raced at their first out of territory event with strong finishes.

Annie Cable finished sixth in the timetrial and criterium and fifth in the road race for U-13 girls. Cable has been battling injury and sickness ahead of the race, but still put in full effort.

Mollie Fraser was 10th in the timetrial and 11th in the road race during her first year in the U-15 girls category. Fraser had a flat tire in the criterium, but was able to get on after her free lap to finish with the group.

Johna Irving-Staley was 12th in the timetrial.

The Taggart Cox brothers also competed. Lucas posted a new personal record in the U-13 boys road race.

“He (Lucas) raced solid in all of his races and showed his ability to stay with the pack,” said Irving.

Micah held his own in the competitive U-17 group. In the general classification (all three races’ results combined) he finished 16 out of 35.

Cauis competed in the U-15 group and posted strong results in the competitive category.

But it was Ava Irving-Staley who had the stand-out weekend, standing on the podium in each of her U-13 events with a bronze and two silvers.

“Ava had a stellar race,” said Irving. She raced with team DEVO and the girls worked together .

Irving-Staley plans to log some more training miles with that team in Vancouver this summer.
