Their opponent remains a mystery, but the Whitehorse Huskies have a plan for this weekend’s two-game senior hockey series.

“We’ll try and scout them out during the warmups,” joked Huskies head coach Mike Tuton of the Powell River Regals.

“I’m guessing they’re going to be a lot younger and faster than our previous opponent.

“It’s kind of tough to prepare for them,” he added. “I don’t know much about them, but they’re a senior hockey team that’s been around for a long time – so they’re going to have that on their side for sure.”

The Huskies will host the Regals for two games this weekend at Takhini Arena, with both Friday and Saturday’s contests starting at 7:45 p.m.

The local squad is currently 4-0 on the year, having swept their home-and-home series over the Fort Nelson Yeti.

The Yukon club was resurrected earlier this season to take a run at the Coy Cup – B.C.’s senior AA hockey championship – scheduled to take place in Fort Nelson in March.

To qualify, the club will need to beat the Fort St. John Flyers in a two-game series scheduled to take place Feb. 27 and 28 in the B.C. town.

J.J. Gainsforth will get the starting nod in between the pipes Friday, Tuton noted, while Gibson Pearson will move to the blue-line to replace Tim MacIntosh, who is out of town.

Burton Stephens, who had two assists in the Huskies’ 14-7 win Jan. 10, will also miss Saturday’s contest.

A situation that saw the beer gardens open late for the Jan. 10 game has also been remedied for the upcoming series, Tuton said.

Fans of the game will be treated to twice the action this weekend, as the Whitehorse Bantam Mustangs are hosting the Eagle River Alaska Blue Devils for a four-game series.

The Mustangs and Blue Devils will face off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and will be followed by the Huskies- Regals matchup both nights.

The bantam games are being billed as the last chance to see the Mustangs in action before the B.C. provincial championships in March.

The Mustangs and Blue Devils will also play games Saturday and Sunday mornings, said Mustangs head coach Martin Lawrie.

This will not be the last senior hockey series held here this season. The Huskies will host the Yellowknife Flyers over the Feb. 14 weekend, Tuton announced yesterday.

Tuton, who also serves as coach of the junior Huskies, said the novice club will be representing the territory this weekend at a tournament in Vernon, B.C.
