A summer mushing event scheduled for this month was called off due to inclement weather.
Sunday’s Hot Hounds race scheduled to happen on the Copper Haul Road was cancelled on Friday due to an “ugly weather forecast,” according to a note on the Dog Powered Sports Association of the Yukon (DPSAY) website.
However, one final race is slated to occur next month before the return of the winter Twister series.
The summer Hot Hounds series sees mushers competing in bikejor and canicross events.
Details on the September race will be released soon, DPSAY board president Virginia Sarrazin said today.
Meanwhile, a brand-new canine competition will be unveiled in Whitehorse this weekend.
The inaugural Canadian Dog Puller Championship will take place Saturday at the École Émilie-Tremblay soccer field, said organizer Erika Rozsa-Atkinson.
The local dog obedience school instructor said dog puller is brand new to North America.
The sport originated in the Ukraine three years ago and works the mind of dogs through the use of ring-based competitions.
Twenty-six dogs are registered for the event which features many types of competition using the rings, said Rozsa-Atkinson. Cardio, mental stimulation and muscle building are foundational to the sport.
