The Whitehorse Cross-Country Ski Club is hoping to have a temporary shelter up soon at the site of Harvey’s Hut.

The beloved wooden ski hut at Copper and Dog Trails about three kilometres from the ski chalet at Mount McIntyre was burned down this fall.

The community stepped up and an online fundraising page raised over $15,000 for the rebuilding effort. Local businesses also offered support. The ski club has also put forward $15,000 of its own.

It was ruled too late to build a permanent structure this season. Instead, the club is hopeful a walled tent will be installed before Christmas, according to a post on their Facebook page.

“We are going to rebuild,” said club president Bill Curtis the day after the fire. “There’s a lot of people rallying around to get this done.”

The Harvey’s Hut Rebuilding Committee, which was formed a couple months ago, is still deciding on the best option for a permanent structure.

Construction on the new Harvey’s hut is set to begin spring 2017.

Seems that steel fabrication, lexan windows, and a steel exterior door with a digital deadbolt (with the number changing weekly and posted somewhere in the wax room with a camera above it - similar to an ATM) would be the best use of construction dollars and effort.

Can't have the little fckers burning it down again.

A few well camouflaged wildlife cameras might also be a good investment.
