The Whitehorse Glacier Bears awoke from hibernation to post some excellent results at the Dino Cup last weekend.

The annual event saw eight competitive swimmers from the territory take part in the April 16 and 17 meet held at the Calgary Aquatics Centre.

Thomas Gishler turned in an impressive meet for Yukon, winning gold for 10-year-old boys in the 200 individual medley and silver in the 200 freestyle, while taking more than 30 seconds off his previous best time.

“All the Glacier Bears performed strongly and the majority of their swims resulted in new best times,” said attending coach Richard Galloway.

“The standard of swimming was very high and some of the times from the winning swimmers were very quick indeed.”

The Dino Cup has become one of the swimming competitions the Glacier Bears attend each year, he noted.

Hosted by the University of Calgary Swim Club, it is one of the few swimming competitions that is for younger competitors only. Clubs from all over Alberta attend.

If you’re older than 10 then you’re out of luck. Under 10 and then there is some great competition to be had.

“It was a great competition, the swimmers learned a lot, did well and – most of all – had fun,” Galloway said.
