A large troupe of mis-adventure seekers crisscrossed the backcountry in Mount Lorne on Sunday.

The 13th annual Mount Lorne Mis-Adventure Trail Race featured 44 runners tackling the 21-kilometre route.

Race record-holder David Eikelboom had hoped to break his mark of 1:12:09 from last year, but eventually settled for a time of 1:14:57.

Eikelboom has now won the last three Mis-Adventure races.

“I was struggling a little bit at the end,” the 28-year-old admitted. “I had only had a week of good interval training after Skagway, so I went out pretty fast and hard.”

Eikelboom said he tweaked his right knee in the Skagway half marathon and wasn’t able to run his usual schedule leading up to the event.

“It’s a really fun race,” he said. “It’s a unique course and a great primer for the Yukon River Trail Marathon. It’s a great chance for people to try it.”

Eikelboom noted the Mis-Adventure race is the only other trail half marathon on the Yukon’s summer docket.

Finishing behind Eikelboom were Scott Williams (1:23:49) and Keith Thaxter (1:27:43).

Top female finishers were Sue Bogle (1:37:45), Virginia Sarrazin (1:41:49) and Sarah Johnson (1:47:02).

As for mis-adventures along the way, the Athletics Yukon president said he spotted more than three piles of bear scat along the trail.

“If they had been any fresher, they would have been steaming,” Eikelboom quipped.

The event is an annual fundraiser for the Mount Lorne Volunteer Fire Department.

In the past, registration fees have helped the unit purchase equipment or appliances for its headquarters.

This year’s $1,000 will likely go towards supplementary insurance for the firefighters, said spokesperson Judy Beaumont.

She noted she was floored by the turnout this year.

“Usually we have a couple dozen people,” she said. “This was our largest turnout yet.”

New this year was a five-km walk/run category, enjoyed by nine participants.
