A year after breaking the course record during a rainy Mount Lorne Mis-Adventure Trail Race, David Eikelboom did it again Sunday.

Eikelboom crushed the field of 30-plus, finishing the approximately 20-kilometre race in a new record of 1:12:09 – more than five minutes faster than his record run last year.

The 12th annual race took place in cool, cloudy conditions with temperatures around 13 degrees.

The second- and third-place male finishers were in another time zone behind Eikelboom, who was race runner-up two years ago.

Tedd Tucker, this season’s most successful male runner in the Thursday night Coast Mountain Sports trail runs, finished second in 1:28, followed by masters runner Tom Ullyett in 1:33.

On the women’s side, former varsity runner Lauren Whyte won for the third straight year, crossing the finish line in 1:38.

Just 37 seconds behind Whyte was runner-up Virginia Sarrazin, while finishing third was masters runner Sue Bogle, who finished in 1:42:04.

Last month, Bogle finished first in her age category at the Manitoba Marathon, completing the 42-km race in 3:39:31.6.

Bogle was the ninth woman of 107 to cross the line in Winnipeg, and continues to enjoy a fantastic running season.

The Mis-Adventure route features a wicked uphill at the seven-km mark and innumerable twists, turns and forks that require runners to keep a sharp eye on the colourful tape marking the route.

Also found along the way is a forested dead zone that looks like a scene from the Blair Witch Project, followed by a boggy area where wet, mucky shoes are inevitable.

“Still, the friendly atmosphere, easy-going charm of the race volunteers, stunning scenery and great food have brought runners back year after year since 2003,” said Ullyett.

The run is a fund-raiser for the Mount Lorne Volunteer Fire Department, and is hosted by residents of the small hamlet community south of Whitehorse.

The brainchild of Sue MacKinnon and Bill Dunn was led by chief of race Carol Spillette, and raised $775 for the local firefighters.

The real winner is the people of mount Lorne who have fires. This money will help extinguish flames and frowns.
