Curtain falls on competitive dirt bike season

The final race of the Yukon Cross Country Motorcycle Association’s (YCCMA) season came with a unique twist Sunday.

The final race of the Yukon Cross Country Motorcycle Association’s (YCCMA) season came with a unique twist Sunday.

The group staged its inaugural enduro-cross event at the Schirmer family ranch near Mount Lorne, which saw riders race more often around a shorter track.

The event included three 15-minute heats per age class on a one-km open single track and obstacle course, which varied in difficulty depending on class.

The most difficult terrain included logs, rocks, cars, culverts, loader tires and more, race marshal Mike Beaman told the Star.

The change was intended to “mix it up and get some different riders out,” he explained.

Typically, YCCMA events are held in hare scramble format, which sees riders travel longer-distance tracks through the countryside, with victory going to those who complete the most laps within a timed period.

“We did a points system throughout the day, and whoever had the most points at the end of the day won,” said Beaman. “If you had a bad race, you could catch up on the following races. You could have a chance to redeem yourself.”

Travis Adams took home victory in the Expert ‘A’ category, while Neil Ryckman and Julien Revel won their respective Intermediate ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions.

Other winners included Emma Murphy (Novice), Cole Beaman (Junior Over-15), Saul Gale (Junior Under15) and Seth Adams (Mini).

Having the younger divisions race more was key to the format change.

“The most important thing was that the kids got to race more through the day,” said Beaman. “This was the first time we did short heats like this. It seems like everyone had a lot of fun and we’ll probably end up doing another one for sure next year.”

A fun foot race was also held between races, where competitors raced the loop on foot for a variety of prizes.

Broden Cull won the junior event, while Tim Schirmer took top spot in the senior category.

“It was quite entertaining,” the race marshal said. “It kind of broke up the day.”

With another season in the books, Beaman said the Yukon dirt bike community continues to maintain a consistent competitive presence.

“This was the first year we did three races in the season, which I think is a real good thing,” he said. “We had two hare scrambles and the different race at the end was a good positive.

“I think everybody likes what’s going on. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback and I think we’ll keep doing what we’re doing.”
