The first of three Whitehorse Curling Club rinks competing in national championships this month has returned from a 2-7 showing in Swan River, Man.

The first of three Whitehorse Curling Club rinks competing in national championships this month has returned from a 2-7 showing in Swan River, Man.

Led by skip Bob Smallwood, who along with his wife Jody Smallwood was representing the Yukon at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championships for the fifth consecutive year, the team finished the pool play with a 1-5 record securing an 8-6 victory over Prince Edward Island.

Three of their five losses were by a single point including their opening round defeat to the eventual champions from Ontario.

Playing in the seeding pool after the round robin, the team went 1-2 beating Nunavut 9-0 to finish with an overall record of two wins and seven losses.

Sarah Koltun played third for the team and Alex Peech was the second in their first time playing with the Smallwood rink at the championships.

Two other Whitehorse teams are in national action this week at the Travelers Curling Club Championship in Kingston, Ont.

The men’s team skipped by Dustin Mikkelsen is off to a 1-0 start after a 6-5 victory over the Northwest Territories Monday afternoon. They are in action today against Northern Ontario.

On the women’s side led by skip Peggy Dorosz, the team is 0-1 after falling 10-2 to Nova Scotia in their opening game.

The team was in action against Newfoundland and Labrador this morning before taking on Quebec this evening.
