Super Hoops action concluded Thursday night with a 98-60 victory for the Vanier Crusaders senior boys basketball team over the F.H. Collins Warriors.

The final was held at Vanier Catholic Secondary School.

In a game highlighted by stellar defence by both teams, it was Vanier’s fast team-oriented offence that set them apart from F.H.

The Crusaders, with the help of their full-court press, quickly took a 30-point lead in the first quarter.

They held this lead until half when they ended the second quarter with a 28-point lead.

The Warriors came back strong in the third, cutting the lead to within 20 behind the strong shooting of Hughie Fordyce-Fortune and the driving of Ryan Hindson.

Malcolm Muir and Keith Foote also made impacts on defence as F.H. cut the 30-point lead by a third.

However, the Vanier boys put their starters back in as soon as the game started to look winnable for F.H., and with them back on the floor, brought back the press.

Within two minutes, the lead was back up to 35.

The Crusaders benefitted from big contributions by reigning MVP Chris Carino and Ian New, both of whom scored more than 15 points.

Along with their strong performances, Christian Cuenza, John Pagobo, and Alex Bouvier all chipped in five points or more while making plays for their teammates.

While Josh Tobias and RJ Siosan were quiet on the scoreboard, both made an impact on defence and dished some crisp passes.

Meanwhile, in the Super Hoops semifinal held in the Vanier gymnasium Wednesday, F.H. Collins squeaked by Porter Creek by just three points.

The game was highlighted by some stellar defence from the Warriors, anchored by Muir.

The team moved like a unit while playing a nice man-to-man press.

Cassel Scholz made a big impact for PC, both on the boards and in terms of points, while Brad Jacobson and Chris Nerysoo both made contributions on the scoreboard.

It was not enough however, and the sharp shooting from Fordyce-Fortune, Hindson, and Foote was enough to get past the Rams.

With the Super Hoops title in their hands, the Crusaders will now look to defend their title at the Yukon Championships this weekend.

Games will be held at Porter Creek and F.H. Collins, with the finals taking place at Vanier Saturday.

The leadup to the final has already begun with Porter Creek battling F.H. Collins Sunday, Vanier taking on Porter Creek Monday, and F.H. taking on their Riverdale rivals tonight.

The semifinals will take place Thursday at F.H. Collins.
