Registration for the Buckwheat Ski Classic is now open.

The popular long-distance race day will be held on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway, Alaska on March 25.

Last year, the event was held in April due to Whitehorse hosting the Haywood Ski Nationals in March.

Its Star-Wars theme saw Stormtroopers, Princess Leias, Ewoks and many more beloved characters from the franchise. The best costume award went to Curtis Brock, of Spruce Grove, Alta., whose Wookie costume was bigger and furrier than the rest.

This year’s theme is Dr. Seuss and the best costume award will be based on “Oh, the Places You’ll Ski!”

The winner of the best costume award will received a tour package to Skagway’s Upper Dewey Lake cabin.

The race is a fundraiser for the Log Cabin Ski Society (LCSS), which was formed in 2012. LCSS maintains the Log Cabin Ski Trails, which are located about 44 kilometres north of Skagway on the S. Klondike Highway.

The trails are recognized as an official cross-country skiing recreation area by BC Forestry and LCSS works closely with them on trail work, a map, information kiosks and helps Parks Canada keep the rest rooms open in the trailhead’s parking lot.

This year’s race distances will include: 50K, 25K, 10K and a kids’ 5K.

Registration is available online at buckwheatskiclassic.com.

Hard-copy forms are also available at The Mountain Shop in Skagway, Coast Mountain Sports in Whitehorse, Lutak Lumber in Haines, Alaska, and Foggy Mountain Outfitters in Juneau. They can be dropped off in Skagway or Juneau by March 17.

Race fees for adults start at $40.
