Registrations are now being accepted for the 2016 Buckwheat Ski Classic.
The 30th annual end-of-winter cross-country ski event will be held on the Log Cabin Ski Trails north of Skagway, Alaska, April 2.
The race date was moved into April this year to accommodate the Canadian national ski races in Whitehorse that end on Easter weekend.
Organizers hope to draw some of those skiers to the Buckwheat the following weekend, as well as the usual crowds from Yukon and Alaska.
Registration is now available at: www.buckwheatskiclassic.com.
This year’s theme for Buckwheat XXX (30) is “Ski Wars: May the Wax be with You.”
A total of 415 skiers participated last year, and another big race is anticipated this year.
The race is a fundraiser for Log Cabin Ski Society, which maintains the ski trails with equipment and volunteers from Skagway and Yukon.
The colourful Buckwheat Ski Classic will again have 50-, 25- and 10-kilometre classic cross-country ski races, as well as a five-km kids race.
Meanwhile, at the Whitehorse club, the annual Air North Challenge will get underway Monday, with one lucky skier or snowshoer winning two return flights to any Air North destination.
Look for the familiar orange and white orienteering controls while exploring the trails at the Whitehorse Nordic Centre.
A unique punch will identify each control point, courtesy of Yukon orienteering. More information is available at www.xcskiwhitehorse.ca.
