Sunday’s Yukon Cross Country Championship was truly an event for all ages.

Almost half of the 31 runners who turned out for the running event on the Mount McIntyre ski trails were under the age of 10, according to the results.

The largest class was the 1,500-metre race for nine-year-olds that saw five runners compete, with Nicholas Bradford posting the winning time of six minutes and nine seconds.

And there were two runners in the 60-plus category.

“There was lots of little kids and they were so cute,” Marg White, an organizer and time keeper for the championship, said Tuesday. “The two little four-year-olds were really sweet.”

Race organizer Don White said the time that stuck out for him was the 38 minutes and 21 seconds posted by Dominic Bradford for the 10,000 metres.

Bradford was officially running in the 8,000-metre event for 45- to 49-year-olds, a race that he won with a time of 30:45 while the only other runner in the class, Scott White, clocked in at 32:59. Bradford went on to also post a time for the 10,000 metres.

“I think Dominic Bradford’s time for the 10,000 metre was pretty much exceptional,” Don said of his overall impression of Sunday’s championship.

He said he didn’t expect to see as many as 31 runners compete but attributes the turnout to cross country ski coaches having their young skiers show up as part of their training.
