Hundreds of thousands of people across Canada and worldwide are expected to participate in the annual Terry Fox Run this Sunday.

The community of Whitehorse is no exception with its event to take place at Rotary Peace Park at 1 p.m.

Now in its 34th year, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than $650 million towards cancer research since its inception in 1981.

The Terry Fox Foundation is responsible for supporting close to $20 million in discovery-based research each year in Canada.

Yukoners have generously supported the cause with over $35,000 dollars donated in the past seven years.

“The goal of the Whitehorse Terry Fox Run is to create an event that brings the community together, raises awareness and funds for cancer research and celebrates the legacy of Terry Fox,” said organizer George Maratos.

“This year’s event will include a barbecue and live music by local musicians Sarah MacDougall and The Midnight Sons.”

Registration will begin at noon Sunday with the run (loop of the Millennium Trail) starting at 1 p.m.

As per Terry Fox’s request, the run will not be timed and participants can choose how they take part, be it running, walking or cycling.

Terry Foxers are asked to contribute what they can, keeping in mind that Terry was all about the effort, taking himself to the limit for the cause, and bringing an end to cancer.

Last year’s event in Whitehorse raised nearly $5,400.

Besides the event in the Yukon capital, runs will also be held in Dawson City and Watson Lake.
