GOVERNMENT HAS FAILED ON SEVERAL FRONTS – Russ Hobbis, who intends to run for the Yukon Liberal Party in this year’s election, speaks to reporters this morning.

Yukon Party loses former loyalist to Liberals

“We have a problem. Our territorial government has lost its way.”

By Aimee O'Connor on January 26, 2016

“We have a problem. Our territorial government has lost its way.”

Russ Hobbis, the owner of Bilsten Creek Tree Service, told reporters this morning he intends to run for the Yukon Liberal Party in the upcoming territorial election.

He will be seeking the nomination for Porter Creek South, the riding he previously sought with the Yukon Party in 2011 against current MLA Mike Nixon.

In a modest press conference this morning, he elaborated on his decision to try to run again, this time with a different political party.

Close to his heart is an issue with the Department of Education.

Hobbis said the department and the minister responsible have “failed” to meet the needs of children by having a lack of funding and faculty afraid to speak out in fear they lose their jobs.

“I’ll never give up fighting for Yukon’s children,” Hobbis said.

If nominated and eventually elected, he added, he would reinstate funding for education assistants and other staff who help children in schools.

A year ago, Hobbis spoke out against the Department of Education for refusing to acknowledge there are not enough education assistants in the territory.

His 11-year-old daughter, Molly, has autism. He said at the time Molly had a full-time assistant in Kindergarten, but she lost support after that.

“I had issues with the way the government deals with things that doesn’t go their way,” Hobbis said today.

It was that issue that led to his decision to run in this year’s election.

He also turned in his Yukon Party membership more than a year ago, he said.

“Yukon Party values have so far strayed. ... that I can no longer be with them.”

In addition to educational goals, Hobbis said he has been “disgusted” with the current government’s plans for the new fibre optic link along the Dempster Highway and into the Northwest Territories.

Yukon Liberal Leader Sandy Silver has similarly criticized the link for being “sole-sourced” to Northwestel Inc. “without any competition.”

Northwestel’s proposal for the link had the company contributing more than 75 per cent of the total cost of ownership, and it will assume ongoing operations and maintenance over the lifetime of the fibre.

Hobbis said if elected, he would revisit the project and make sure the project is in the interest of Yukoners – and explore the opportunity to have the project owned by Yukon government and not a private company.

Relationships between the Yukon’s First Nations and the government are also of concern to Hobbis.

“The willingness to work together is gone,” he said.

He added another campaign promise to invite First Nations’ leaders to a forum to “mend the wounds that the current government created.”

Hobbis lived in the Porter Creek South riding for about 16 years, and his fiancée still has a house there.

When asked how he felt about running against incumbent MLA Nixon, Hobbis stayed confident.

“I think my chances are good. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have put my name forward.”

Fed up Yukoner pretty much hits the nail on the head.

We also can't forget that when the Chambers of Commerce said jump, the YP said how high. A good example is the abuse of the TFW program(s) running it at full throttle with no checks and near zero diversity. What were they thinking knowing full well we were ramping down to a low point in the economic cycle.

Neither the Chamber or any other lobby group/NGO should have that much influence in our Yukon. Same with the old boys and girls political clubs out there. That influence has to end once and for all.

If they get in, let us hope this version of the Yukon Libs are better than the last or they will also be a one term government. They have to represent us, not govern us in lockstep with Ottawa. It would be nice to have 4 or 5 years with a government quietly and efficiently working in the background for all Yukoners, rather than for their own little network of business and NGO friends.

And remember Yukon Liberals, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And don't forget that the root word of liberal is liberty, we need more of that - economic, social, personal - not less.

We also can't forget that part of the reason the YP got away with all they did was due to the epic lameness of the ideologically driven NDP opposition, too busy tilting at windmills like fracking, GMO and SJW political correctness to pay attention to the real damage the YP was doing. Both the YP and the NDP badly need a good housecleaning.

Seen it all over and over since Erik Nielsen days until present. on Jan 31, 2016 at 2:43 am

Since the bygone days of Erik Nielsen we've had the neputal good ol' boys controlling things politically for a long time. They've run businesses well but have mostly directed the funneling of the Federalxfer payments for they're own behalf with competition not the most deciding factor. Friends, family getting sweet deal contracts has been the norm for as far back as anyone can remember.
The Liberals have had some good people in there but there has always been too few of them to change the status quo.
The NDP came along and built up a successful people's party but always screwed up any big project they took on with too much overburden and innuendo.
So from my perspective it would be nice to see a reversal of political power and a few of the chess pieces like Scott Kent (former Duncan Liberal turncoat) and Darius (who is he with now) Elias have they're futures freed up. A house cleaning of all the cloned family Government success stories is long over due. The Yukon needs a breath of fresh political air in the worst way in order to progress with people that can climb the hill. Go Russ Hobbis!

While I do wonder about jumping ship to some extent is inevitable, most of these guys who are joining the Liberals are folks who really thought the Yukon Party was the way to go and have made the difficult decision to join another party as they have realized that the Yukon Party has gone rogue. There are many of us stalwart ex Yukon Party supporters who are appalled at what has been done to our territory. There has been enough nepotism, old boys club and secret deals to last us a lifetime in the last Yukon Party tenure. I am really scared to see what condition our beautiful territory will be in when they are done, $200 million for a road not needed, 150/300 bed extended care for a place with 37,000 folks and no mines and few decent jobs unless you can handle being a govy toadie and there are far too many of them. I will be voting Liberal with misgivings but they are the least likely to keep going down this destructive path, my opinion

I would like to congratulate Russ for throwing his hat in the ring. It's an amazing thing to see people who have an issue with the way government is operating and actually have the balls to do something about it. I give respect to any person, of any party, who puts their name forward to serve the public.

As for being a party hopper, if people in the Yukon REALLY cared about that - hardly anyone would get voted in. How cool is it that the Liberal Party is recruiting candidates who (a) recognize there is a better way of doing things and (b) switch Parties before an election and not after they've been voted in. Maybe we would be better served by talking about election reform with perspective candidates?

As for being a "single issue candidate" I don't believe that to be true - but even it is, maybe its about time that a candidate put some sole focus on education in the Yukon. We are a small population with lots of money per capita (thank you federal transfer payments!). Why aren't we producing the best educated and supported children in the world? If it was a priority, we could be. Our kids are our future and deserve every opportunity to be successful.

Back in the day the Yukon NDP might have been a 'working man's' party but not anymore. And yes, they do play the 'old boys club' game very well.

working class party is NDP--YP GO AWAYYYYYYY on Jan 29, 2016 at 1:08 am

I am very concerned about the YP taking over the Liberals. I love Tamara G and I love John Streiker. I can see all kinds of potential with Sandy Silver and these two. Sandy, you need to get some honest, hardworking, reputable people like Tamara and John. I can't in good conscience vote you guys in if YP is dominating your party. And get rid of Rod Taylor for PC...he doesn't belong in this riding (or even live here!!!) and he will receive no votes from those of us who do. The Yukon Party sucks and while I want to give the Liberals my vote, I will vote NDP if 'the good ole boys' start changing your red party to purple (red+blue=.......) And to Russ Hobbis, the NDP is the working party. Any other party we've had in power in Canada (Libs and Cons) have been rich white business men, lawyers and such, from $. If you really want to run for a the 'working class party', join the NDP. It seems those of you YP dissenters just want to catch the JT wave.....I personally think you are doing it just to sabotage the Liberals. Liberals, be strong and turf these sabotagers out!!! We need the YP GONE!! People think of that...we could have the YP in power again if they don't stop sending their boys to wreck the Liberal chances.

A sad situation for the Liberal Party the Leader the only Liberal, the remainder are jumpers who don't know what they are or would not be accepted as candidates by any other party. I am confident that vetted there certainly would be room for a former genuine Liberal however a serious look at the slate may or should or would lead him to a wise decision and move him to the Yukon Party. For the sake of credibility vet your candidates. Don't run someone that could make Duffy look like Saint.

Too bad such a small jurisdiction is so focused on party politics rather than an individual. I've lost track of who has changed parties over the years, and I prefer to vote for the person not the party.

Lost in the Yukon on Jan 27, 2016 at 10:01 pm

There is going to be so many former Yukon Party folks or people who have had connections to them that, running for the Liberals in the next election that the "Liberal" Party will become almost indistinguishable from the Yukon Party. At present three of the five were card carrying members until recently and one the YP had put on the Hospitable Board.

I made a mistake seeking a nomination for Yukon Party in 2011 at that time I believed it to be a party for the working class. The past 5 years have proven that this is not the case. I don't expect everyone to agree with me but I will be transparent throughout this campaign so I am certainly willing to have discussions with anyone and everyone. I think this election will be about getting the Yukon Party out, and not so much about who gets in. The liberals have 1 really promising candidate... the YP.. none.. NDP.. I really like Kate White and Jan Stick.. two are not enough to carry an election..but, who knows these days...

The one thing I do know is that YP has got to go.

I don't know who I'll vote for between the NDP and Liberals, but if the Liberals embrace many more of these YP, Conservative types, it won't be such a hard decision. It's looking more right-wing all the time.

While I agree with your sentiments Russ, running under a single issue is a recipe for failure.
