A Haines Junction woman died after falling from her horse over the Discovery Day long weekend, the Yukon Coroner’s Service confirmed to the Star today.

Kimberly Chambers, 28, was moose-hunting near Dezadeash Lake at the time.

She fell from her horse at around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, sustaining traumatic head injuries.

Chambers was hunting with one partner.

Each hunter was on horseback, leading an additional packhorse.

Kirsten Macdonald, chief coroner for the Yukon, said Chambers’ hunting partner found a woman camping in the area.

That woman had a SPOT device which they used to call for assistance.

Chambers was taken to the nursing station at Haines Junction, then air evacuated to Whitehorse General Hospital.

She succumbed to her injuries on Monday evening.

Macdonald said Chambers was a very experienced rider, on a horse with which she was familiar.

Macdonald said there is some suggestion that one of the pack horses was green, but she is still working out the circumstances of the fall.

This is the third horse-related death in the territory in recent years, the coroner noted.

This is sad to hear. I only know of it thru watching Dr. Oakley..and I'm sure there are many grieving their loss who knew and loved this lady. May the Lord walk with you all in the days ahead.

Please accept my deepest condolences. After seeing the Memorial, I looked up everything i could find about this young woman and her passion for life. Her love of the land and PROPER hunting practices and deep love for her horses were truly inspirational! I will be 50 soon. I have raised 4 beautiful children to productive young adults, yet I long for the passion Kimberly lived every day of her life! I too grew up on the backs of horses, but started a family young and that was my focus, as it SHOULD BE! I wouldn't trade it for the world!! However, many times over I wish we had stayed in the country. The love of Horses still flow through my veins. It's always in my mind and heart. Thank you Kimberly for the life you lived and that your passion can be felt by a stranger thousands of miles away!

I KNOW that every time the wind blows and the wild herds gallop, you are there. You are the sunrise over the horizon, and the rainbow after the storm. You are in every beauty to behold, and I know your family see's you in everything beautiful and cherished! What I wouldn't give to ride the trails you protected and brush the horses you loved. It would be my dream come true!! It feels like I knew you, I know I will someday. I can only imagine the mark you left behind and the legacy for family and friends. You lived many lifetimes in your earthly years. May we ALL strive to live your example till we all meet again.

Such a tragic, and fluke, accident. I saw she was a mother as well as a wife. May God grant them comfort in their tragic loss. She was blessed to live a life others only dream of. For that her family can be happy. I saw the memorial on Dr. Oakley. May she rest in peace.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Chambers family. What a fluke accident - no one could have seen it coming. Horses are big loving animals but they do spook and they have so much weight that it is hard to stop things happening.
